The failed diplomacy between Iran and the United States in 1979 led to the Iranian Hostage Crisis. For 444 days the United States government debated on how to free the hostages. A policy of restraint with economic sanctions instead of a retaliatory response may have drawn out the release process, but diplomatic negotiations succesfully released the hostages. The consequences have continued to impact Iranian and American relations still to this day.
